What is store-bought hot chocolate mix made of?

If you’re wondering why make your own vegan hot chocolate mix? The manufactured version has a lot of ‘extras’ that aren’t good for you. This is a snippet of what is in those oh-so-convenient packages of hot chocolate you purchase at the grocery store:

  • sugar
  • sucrose
  • corn syrup
  • hydrogenated oils
  • artificial flavour
  • carrageenan
  • and a bit of cocoa

That’s in one package and it is all empty calories and zero nutrition.

The Honour System’s gluten-free hot chocolate recipe has none of that. But it does have coffee. 😉

Woot woot!

Finally a healthy recipe without that yucky dry milk powder! I use erythritol for sweetener. Thanks for recipe… I’ve been making my own concoction same ingredients but my neighbor wants some for Christmas and I didn’t know measurements. So glad I found your recipe!

    1. Awesome! I’m glad you found it too. 🙂 I like the erythritol substitution idea too! Great idea for less of the sugary stuff. Thanks, Christina!

  2. I skipped the instant coffee ingredient because I actually use a half of a tablespoon in my coffee and I LOVE IT! Thank you so much!

    1. That’s awesome! I’m so glad you love the mix. It’s just so much better when you make your own, right? Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, Jessica!

  3. This sounds yummy! Just wondering if you can substitute the coconut sugar as I don’t think I can buy it here in Dubai

    1. Hmmm … can you get another type of unrefined sugar? Organic cane sugar would probably work. You could also make it unsweetened and add maple syrup to the hot mixture.
